Patoka Lake spans 8,800 surface acres across Dubois, Crawford, and Orange counties — Indiana's second-largest reservoir. The lake is renowned for its largemouth bass fishery (consistently ranked among Indiana's top 5) and its hybrid striped bass program, which produces fish into the high teens annually. Crappie fishing is exceptional in spring around the abundant standing timber. The Newton-Stewart SRA is the main public access, with multiple boat ramps, marinas, and the Patoka Lake Marina operating boat rentals. Submerged structure, creek arms, and rip-rapped dam areas provide year-round opportunities. Patoka also holds Indiana's reintroduced bald eagle population and is part of a wildlife management area — combining angling with wildlife viewing.
